Kelly: The Tiger Woods era, R.I.P.

The myth of Tiger Woods couldn’t die until someone was ready to take his place. Enter U.S. Open champ Rory McIlroy.

Tiger Woods Trying to Make One Last Desperate Surge While Rory McIlroy Announces His Emergence After a rousing stretch in the 2011 Masters, Tiger Woods was supposed to be re-emerging as a threat to the rest of the golfing world in 2011. But after re-injuring his left Achilles tendon and left ACL at the 2011 Players Championship, Woods had to withdraw from the U.S. Open. Now, it’s 22-year-old …

Even an affable, easygoing guy like Graeme McDowell can succumb to the burden that comes with being a first-time U.S. Open champion. The pride of Portrush, Northern Ireland, basked in a special 2010 that included the Father’s Day win at Pebble Beach, three other tournament wins and the Ryder Cup. Quite the talker, he’s happily relived it all many times in his mind — and over and over and…

This undated image shows Johnny McDermott, winner of the U.S. Open golf championship in 1911 and 1912. McDermott set the standard for American golf. He became the youngest U.S. Open champion 100 years ago, a career that ended a short time later when he was put in a mental hospital.

Johnny McDermott arrived at the golf course without fanfare — virtually unnoticed, to be more precise — dropped off by his sister near the front door. The assistant golf pro at the Overbrook Golf Club was scheduled to meet McDermott at the door, take him to the course and play nine holes, the way they did every Saturday and Sunday when the weather was good.

New old putter. New grip. New course. Two-time U.S. Open champ Retief Goosen hopes that’ll do the trick this week at the Shell Houston Open. And, maybe at next week’s Masters, too. Goosen added Houston – and the Valero Texas Open the week after the Masters – to his schedule this year to play his [...]

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Tiger Woods is not even No. 2 in the golf rankings.

He has dropped to No. 3 after Martin Kaymer won in Abu Dhabi and overtook him for the No. 2 spot. Lee Westwood is No. 1.

Kaymer has been No. 3 but advanced by winning the European Tour event by eight strokes in his first tournament this year. Woods begins his 2011 season Thursday at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

Kaymer said “we’ll see how long it takes him to overtake me again.”

Master champion Phil Mickelson dropped to a No. 5 ranking. He had been sharing fourth with U.S. Open champ Graeme McDowell, who tied for third in Abu Dhabi.

Mickelson finished 37th Sunday. He says he doesn’t dwell on the rankings and is concentrating on the upcoming majors.

Stewart Cink Dishes on PB&J Stall

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Stewart Cink, playing in this week’s Children’s Miracle Network Classic at Disney World — the former British Open champ’s first competitive appearance since last month’s Ryder Cup — wanted to set the record straight.

He is not nearly as crafty and everybody thinks.

“I have no tricks in my toolbox,” Cink said.

All the same, on the way to compiling a 1-0-3 record he provided one of the Ryder Cup’s most replayed moments that suggested otherwise.

It was Saturday’s second round of play at Celtic Manor. Cink and teammate Matt Kuchar were playing Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

The Europeans had just rallied from a two-hole deficit to tie the alternate-shot match going into the 17th hole. The gallery at Celtic Manor was crazed all week, but suddenly it sounded like a jumbo jet preparing for take off.

McDowell hit a tee shot that ended about five feet from the pin, setting McIlroy up for a very makeable birdie putt for the lead. Kuchar’s tee shot left Cink with a 25-footer.
