Allenby kept it simple on a gorgeous day along Sunset Boulevard with a 4-under 67 that turned out to be enough for a share of the lead when former Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin faltered late.

Corey Pavin and Fred Couples made it feel like the 1990s all over again as they worked their way onto a crowded leaderboard at Riviera, the course where they combined to win four times in a six-year stretch. Turns out they weren’t the only ones who gave a retro look to the convoluted first round of the Northern Trust Open.

Pavin rolled back the years with a superb display over his

Trust Open on Thursday before faltering at the finish.
The redness in Corey Pavin’s left eye was so evident that when a reporter asked him what happened, Pavin playfully covered it with his hand and replied, “What do you mean?” It was just a case of pink eye, although Pavin would have reason to shed tears this week. The former U.S. Open champion and Ryder Cup captain played his first PGA Tour event at Riviera in 1980, when he was a…
• Love takes over for September 2012 match at Medinah
• This is a thrill I never thought I’d have, says 46-year-old
Davis Love III was in tears within minutes of being confirmed as the USA Ryder Cup captain today, being unable to hold back the tears when asked how proud his late father would be of his appointment.
The 46-year-old, a six-time member of the USA team, lost his father in a plane crash in 1988 and said: “This is a thrill I never thought I would have and I would love to share it with him.”
Love, who was one of Corey Pavin’s vice-captains at Celtic Manor last year, believes a key to winning back the trophy at Medinah in Chicago next year will be getting his team relaxed. “My main mission is to get the players prepared for Friday morning,” he said after being confirmed as Pavin’s successor, three months after the 14½-13½ defeat in South Wales
“What we have been missing is getting over the nerves of being ready to play on the biggest stage. We’ve just tried too hard and I’ll be trying to get the players as relaxed and freed up as I can. I am a players’ captain and I’m going to get them what they need to be successful. I’m not going to tell the best players in the world how to play golf. I’m going to let them show their talents.”
After weeks of leaks to make the announcement seemingly anticlimactic, the PGA of America introduced Davis Love III as the successor to Corey Pavin as the American Ryder Cup captain. He will lead the team into Medinah in 2012 in an attempt to win the Ryder Cup back on American soil and take the matches for the second time in three tries.
DAVIS Love III, who faced Jose Maria Olazabal at the start of his Ryder Cup career in 1983 at The Belfry, is set to be confirmed as the opposing captain to the Spaniard at Med
• Olazábal will lead Europe’s defence of the trophy next year
• 44-year-old won seven Ryder Cup caps as a player
José María Olazábal has been named as captain of Europe’s Ryder Cup team for next year’s event in Chicago. The 44-year-old Spaniard had been widely expected to take the position one Colin Montgomerie, who led Europe to a one-point victory at Celtic Manor last year, decided to step down, and his appointment was confirmed this morning.
“The two Masters wins at Augusta National are the highlight of my playing career, but this is my proudest moment,” Olazábal said. “Golf has been my life and representing Europe in the Ryder Cup has given me so much enjoyment, so to be named the European Ryder Cup captain is something very special and I am looking forward to the next 20 months before we reach Medinah.”
Winner of seven caps as a player, Olazábal made his debut at Muirfield Village in 1987 alongside compatriot Seve Ballesteros. They won their first three games together as Europe triumphed on American soil for the first time and went on to be beaten only twice in 15 contests.
His last appearance was at the K Club in Ireland five years ago – he won all his three games there – but after that he served as Nick Faldo’s assistant in Louisville and then joined Colin Montgomerie’s backroom team at Celtic Manor last October.
“Without question the Ryder Cup has given me many memorable times, especially with Seve from the moment we were first partners in 1987 and Europe won in America for the first time,” Olazábal said. “We were unbeaten in 1989 and 1991 and we won our last match together in 1993. Seve was also our captain at Valderrama in 1997 and that was especially significant because the match was played in Spain and, of course, we won.”
Corey Pavin’s successor as American captain will be unveiled on Thursday. It is firmly expected to be Davis Love, one of his backroom team in Wales.

Davis Love III has emerged as the likely candidate to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2012, GolfChannel.com is reporting based on a source close to the situation.
The report states the PGA of America’s board of directors met in November to approve the move, though when exactly the decision will become final is still up in the air.
“It’s our hope to announce the 2012 Ryder Cup captain in the first quarter sometime next year,” Julius Mason, the PGA’s senior director of communications and media relations, told GolfChannel.com.
Love was an assistant captain under Corey Pavin for the 2010 team that lost to the Europeans in Wales 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. In addition, the 46-year-old has played in six matches, accumulating a 9-12-5 overall record and helping the U.S. team to victories in 1993 (Love’s first appearance) and 1999.
While Love was hopeful to play for the team one more time, it’s unlikely he would pass on leading the U.S. team at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill. “I definitely want to be a captain,” Love said at the McGladrey Classic in October when asked about his Ryder Cup future. “If they talk to me about it, I’ll be excited about it.”
Love was an obvious candidate for the PGA of America given his Ryder Cup experience (though not all of it positive — in six matches, he’s only been on two winning teams, is 9-12-5 overall, his longtime connection to the organization as the son of a beloved club club pro, and the fact that he was an assistant to Corey Pavin this year at Davis Love III.
