SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Even here in the desert, TPC Scottsdale is a long, lush oasis of green.
Saturday during the Waste Management Phoenix Open, though, the color could get a little overwhelming as the tournament holds a “Green Out” to promote awareness of the eco-sensitive efforts of the event and its title sponsor.
And for every fan who wears green on Saturday, the tournament host Thunderbirds will donate money to Arizona Clean & Beautiful.
Charley Hoffman and Joe Ogilvy, who represent Waste Management on the PGA TOUR, are among those in contention. Hoffman is 7 under through 33 holes while Ogilvy is 5 under and has yet to start his second round.
So both should get plenty of notice on Saturday — and Hoffman, for one, plans to do his best to live up to the “Green Out” standards.
“I will guarantee you I have green pants, green shoes, green hat, green gloves,” Hoffman said earlier in the week. “I haven’t decided if the white shirt will look better than the green shirt yet. The shirt is probably the only thing up for grabs.”

Bob Hope Classic Power Rankings

Filed under:

Matt KucharThe PGA returns to the mainland and begins its West Coast Swing with the Bob Hope Classic. This tournament features a long list of celebrities playing alongside the professionals, and the setup reflects that. It’s no coincidence that the four courses used in this event ranked in the top-seven easiest in 2010.

Expect one of the lowest scoring weeks of the year as players take on La Quinta Country Club, SilverRock Resort, PGA West’s Nicklaus Course and PGA West’s Palmer Course over five rounds. Only the top 70 and ties will play in Sunday’s final round, which is the same round David Duval fired a 59 to win by a stroke in 1999.

Here’s who we see contending on Sunday:

1. Matt Kuchar — Last year’s money winner has found his place on Tour and seems extremely confident right now. Kuchar, pictured, is one of only two players to record a top-10 finish in each of the first two weeks. In the final round of the Sony Open, he looked as relaxed as anyone and likely would have caught Mark Wilson had he not averaged nearly two putts per GIR.

2. Bubba Watson — The long-hitting lefty didn’t break 70 in the first tournament of the year but still managed a top-25 finish. One of his four top-3 finishes a year ago came at this tournament. His second-round 62 was the lowest of week. With a win under his belt now, maybe he’ll be able to close out the tournament if he finds himself the fourth-round leader again this weekend.

3. Bill Haas — Last year’s winner shot only one round higher than a 66 en route to his first career victory. Haas began this season with a 8th place finish at the Tournament of Champions, where he carded two bogey-free rounds and tied for 7th in driving accuracy. The 28-year-old hasn’t finished outside of the top 30 since September.

4. Charley Hoffman — The 2007 Bob Hope winner welcomes a shootout. Seventh last year in birdie average, Hoffman carded nine over a span of 13 holes during his third round in the opener two weeks ago. He’s also a long hitter with a personality that seems to fit a celebrity event.

5. Brendon de Jonge — Now in his fourth full season on tour, de Jonge is a likely candidate to pick up his first win in 2011. He tied for 6th last year with seven top 10s, which included three top 3s. There’s no questioning his ability to score as he led the Tour in total birdies in 2010.

Defending champion Bill Haas, top 2010 PGA Tour money earner and FedEx Cup playoff runner-up Matt Kuchar, 2009 British Open champion Stewart Cink and 2007 winner Charley Hoffman are among the early commitments among the 128 professionals for the 52nd Bob Hope Classic, January 17-23.

Despite an early-season wrist injury, Charley Hoffman improved his short game (and bunker play) to finish fourth in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Charley Hoffman finished outside the top 100 on the PGA Tour money list two years ago, but is now in a position to win the FedEx Cup title.

Both Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson are among my final golf fantasy picks this season along with Phil Mickelson and Charley Hoffman. All four of these players had fine seasons and Kuchar is my pick to win the Fed Ex Cup in the PGA this season. Phil Mickelson, Tiger WoodsLEMONT, Ill. (AP) — This is the week the PGA Tour goes dark, which comes at a great time.

If nothing else, it might give players a chance to take a deep breath of reality instead of complaining about all the problems that come with driving German-built luxury cars to golf tournaments where they compete for $35 million in bonus money.

Heck, it’s just as easy to lose perspective driving rental cars and getting by on $35 per diems.

Really, is it that bad?

The year before the FedEx Cup began, this was the week of the 84 Lumber Classic.

Winning the FedEx Cup is not as meaningful as winning a major, nor was it ever meant to be. The majors ended a month ago at the PGA Championship, about the time most people are supposed to lose interest in golf. What followed were three tournaments that showcased the best players of the year on the PGA Tour.

If you don’t understand the FedEx Cup — or choose not to learn — is any translation needed for Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Steve Stricker competing in the same tournament for three straight weeks? It’s the only time it happens all year.

The FedEx Cup concludes next week with the Tour Championship, a 30-man field for those who played great during the regular season (Jeff Overton), those who played their best late in the year (Charley Hoffman) and for players who did a little of both.

Charley HoffmanNORTON, Mass. (AP) — Charley Hoffman was rolling in so many putts he lost track of how many birdies he made Monday. His final stroke on a Labor Day masterpiece was his 11th birdie, more than enough to win the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The question is whether it was enough to make him a last-minute pick for the Ryder Cup.

Hoffman ran off four straight birdies early to erase a four-shot deficit, seized control by holing a bunker shot on the 13th and closed with a 9-under 62 on the TPC Boston for a five-shot victory over Geoff Ogilvy, Jason Day and Luke Donald.

Tiger Woods had three rounds in the 60s for the first time this year. He closed with a 69 to tie for 11th, and kept his No. 1 ranking in the world when Phil Mickelson imploded again.

Mickelson needed only to finish fourth to become No. 1 for the first time in his career. Instead, he took two double bogeys on the back nine and shot 76 to tie for 25th. A month ago, Mickelson had an equally good chance at Firestone and shot 78.

Even if he doesn’t make the Ryder Cup, the FedEx Cup is looking pretty good for Hoffman.

He was No. 59 in the standings and arrived at the TPC Boston wanting to make sure he advanced to the third round of the playoffs next week outside Chicago. He wound up a winner, moving to No. 2 in the standings. That assures him a shot at the $10 million bonus, and puts him in all four majors next year after not playing any of them this year.

As for the Ryder Cup? U.S. captain Corey Pavin will make his four selections Tuesday morning in New York. The frontrunners are Woods, Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink, with no one standing out as the fourth choice.

Pavin had said earlier in the week that no one should assume a good week at the Deutsche Bank would put him on the team.

Hoffman, oozing California cool with his blond locks flowing from under his cap and kelly green pants to match his shoes, made a strong impression with his game and his words.
