BANGKOK: British Open champion Darren Clarke said on Friday he wants to end a chequered campaign on a winning note at the inaugural $1 million Thailand Golf Championship.

Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie of Scotland shot a 7-under 65 Thursday to take the early clubhouse lead by three strokes in the opening round at the Dubai World Championship. Lawrie is the 1999 Open winner but has won only once on the European Tour this year and hasn’t had a top-10 finish since May.

British Open champion Darren Clarke completed his final round — a 2-under-par 70 — at the Australian PGA on Sunday more than an hour before the leading groups teed off. Clarke’s early start — the second group of the day at 6:35 a.m. — came after a self-described “brutal” 79 on Saturday, leaving him near the bottom of the 66-man field which made the cut.
